About Pointe-aux-Outardes Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Located along the southern shore of the Saint Lawrence River estuary in Quebec, the Pointe-aux-Outardes Migratory Bird Sanctuary protects a vital wetland area that serves as a resting and feeding site for thousands of migratory birds. Covering expansive tidal flats, salt marshes, and freshwater ponds, the sanctuary supports a rich diversity of waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds throughout the year. It is particularly important during spring and fall migrations when large concentrations of snow geese, Canada geese, and various duck species gather to rest and replenish energy. The sanctuary is managed by Environment Canada and is recognized as an internationally significant site under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. Visitors can explore several boardwalks and trails that allow close access to birds without disturbing their habitat. Paddle sports such as kayaking may be possible in designated areas, providing a unique vantage point to view wildlife and the estuary’s landscape. The sanctuary also offers a peaceful setting for photographers and nature enthusiasts interested in observing bird migrations, nesting activities, and seasonal ecological changes. Nearby infrastructure and interpretive signage enhance visitor understanding of the bird populations and ecosystem functions protected at Pointe-aux-Outardes. The area's coastal location means it experiences a mix of freshwater and saltwater influences, making it a biologically productive environment with important marsh plant communities. Overall, the sanctuary is a key destination for birdwatchers and environmental education in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region.
